A Room with a View　　by E. M. Forster　　（ｐ. 138 ~ p. 157 ）

久守先生の参考資料から

小説の基本構造（導入部、上昇部、頂点（折り返し点）、下降部、終結部）本作品第12章の（聖なる泉）場面が小説の頂点＝折り返し点だとすると、第１５章はすでに下降部。

（The Weald　に広がる美しい秋の風景）

The Sunday was a glorious day. The sun rose higher on its journey, guided, not by Phaethon, but by Apollo, competent, unswerving, divine.

日曜日の午後、Honeychurch家から招待を受けたGeorge とのテニスの試合を終えたLucyの心には、Englandの風景がItalyの風景と重なっていく。

Ah, how beautiful The Weald looked! The hills stood out above its radiance, as Fiesole stands above the Tuscan plain, and the South Downs, if one chose, were the mountains of Carrara. She might be forgetting her Italy, but she was noticing more things in her England. One could play a new game with the view, and try to find in its innumerable folds some town or village that would do for Florence. Ah, how beautiful the Weald looked!

そこに追い打ちをかけるように、Miss Lavishの、GeorgeとLucyの出来事を暴露するような本の部分を、何も知らないCecilが大声で読んだ為に、Italyにいる時とは打って変わったようなGeorgeが一瞬のすきをついて

For the second time, Lucy was kissed by George, who loved passionately.

怒り心頭のLucyはMiss Bartlettを呼び出し、真相を聞いたが、あまりのふがいなさに自分で解決策を考えなくてはならなくなり、Georgeとの決戦に臨む。だが，彼の返答は衝撃的なものだった。

“You cannot live with Vyse. He’s only for an acquaintance. He is for society and cultivated talk. He should know no one intimately, least of all a woman.”

“It is our last chance. I shall do all that I can.”

Preparing to go, “It is being certain that Lucy cares for me really. It is that love and youth matter intellectually.”

He left them, carefully closing the front door.

Lucy had no reaction. “Well, he amuses me, “ she said. “Either I’m mad, or else he is, and I’m inclined to think it’s the latter.”

だがその後、CecilとLucyの家族とのやり取りの中で、

The scales fell from Lucy’s eyes. The same evening Lucy broke her engagement off.

◎Oral Class

Jon先生spent New Year’s holidays in Akita and helped shoveling snow . He enjoyed himself with his friend’s family.

Jon 先生 talked about the history of the cinema , showing some pictures as follows.

In 1891 the Edison Company in the USA successfully demonstrated a prototype of the Kinetoscope, which enabled one person at a time to view moving pictures.

The first to present projected moving pictures to a paying audience (i.e. cinema) were the Lumiere brothers in December 1895 in Paris.

映画

長いフィルム上に連続して撮影した多数の静止画像を映写機で急速に（1秒間１５コマ以上、普通は２４コマ）順次投影し、眼の残像現象を利用して動きのある画像として見せるもの。
